The Duke Of Houston

Posted by mikeybass On April - 12 - 2011

Meet The Duke. The troublesome youngin’ was born in Houston, TX, where his father is from. After he and his mom moved back home to California where the majority of Duke’s family is from, he was exposed firsthand to life in Los Angeles, CA. In the time of gangs and extreme street violence on the West Coast, the chances of a young black man heading towards progression instead of the penitentiary were slim.

After moving back to the south with his father, the street ambition in him led him to hustlin’, only at 10 years old. After he got into the practice of it, the money came. Duke got his first car at 12 while in middle school. Gold chains were the norm for the young man; he had made it all the way from pumping gas for cash and groceries while he was in California. He was accustomed to putting food on the table for his family. His hustle had grown to another level in Houston, however, and he was once again out of control. The young firecracker was heavy in the streets though, in and out of juvenile and correctional facilities.

It was in these solitary confinements away from his fast life that Duke was able to recognize and accept his talent. He had written his first song at a very young age, and he and his cousins would sing it all the time. It wasn’t until 13 that Duke picked up writing as a hobby. As all mistakes can be blessings, jail gave Duke the time to perfect his craft. He credits his gift of not writing down rhymes to his prison stint. He’s been memorizing lines ever since.

Duke has receivedThe Hood Know overwhelming encouragement to explore his rap talents. The vibe of the rap game was interesting to him, especially with the status of Houston rappers at the time. Duke and a few guys he used to hustle with wanted him to work on music with them as well. The group eventually dissolved, but Duke was able to use his music networks to meet Mike D of the original Screwed Up Click.

Mike D continued to look out for young Duke as he learned the industry. This relationship developed a number of additional networks for Duke in Houston: The Southside Playaz, Big Pokey, Z-Ro, and Hawk. From a West Coast standpoint, Duke has landed standout verses on two songs featured on mixtape with Bay Area’s finest, Yukmouth. All of these acts have helped contribute their originality and talent to Duke’s growing popularity and respect. Duke has laid the hottest hooks for a number of Houston artists, and was given the rare opportunity of being featured on DJ Screw’s first CD in stores, as well as featured on the DJ Screw documentary. Duke has also worked with Original gangster Bad Azz of Long Beach., who is featured on Duke’s latest mixtape.

Duke views the rap game as a business. He views himself as an investor, and his talent as an investment. Duke wants to motivate the hoods of Houston, and the south in general, from a hustler’s standpoint. “Don’t be a bum, get some work or a hustle.” His music comes with a trap feel, from a grinding mind state.

Duke hopes to bring some more light to the city; to give it charisma and respect like it used to have. “There should be something to do every single night in Houston, like New York. It should be more exciting here. We need enlightenment!” Duke is putting out 100% of his effort to help build Houston on solid rock. He is refining his rap image and letting listeners know that success is tangible. Houston can be rescued by the real Houston rappers that it already has.

Duke’s current mixtape, Trap Mode, hosted by GO DJ Hi-C is available now. The mixtape features former Day 26 singer Brian Angel, R&B Singer Trace, legendary West Coast rapper Bad Azz, and Yukmouth. Duke currently has two videos out online featured on WSHH, including his first video “Tha Hood Knows” with 80,000 views, and a Big Moe tribute/“Streetz Choze Me” with 250,000 views. Besides having tour dates from Mississippi to Miami, Duke still holds down Houston strong. Duke is willing to put the city on his back, but he has numbers in mind. This is a complete takeover of rap. Reppin’ Houston: Mookie Jones Interview

Posted by lunatic On July - 29 - 2010

Mookie

We hooked up with the nephew of the legendary Big Daddy Kane – That’s right, up and coming MC Mookie Jones has the right to call Big Daddy Kane his blood godfather. Of course, this is a topic we delve into quite a bit – are the two ever going to collaborate? Find out!

Jones was born in Atlanta to musical legend, Oran “Juice” Jones, the first R&B artist on Def Jam to give Russell Simmons a platinum plaque. Moving around from Atlanta to New York to Houston, Jones compares those three hip hop heavyweight cities for us.

Mookie Jones is a member of Eleven 11 Media, the company which helped recently put out his “Tuskegee” mixtape (more on where to find that below) and will eventually put out his “Popular Culture” album.

Mookie Jones is working with Nipsey Hussle, Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA and more.

Enjoy. Auto!

GRAMMY NOMINATED, PLATINUM RAPPER PAUL WALLTO DROP 4TH MAJOR RELEASE, HEART OF A CHAMPION, JULY 13TH BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE MIDDLE EAST ON HIS 4TH USO TOUR

CLOSE FRIEND TRAVIS BARKER PRODUCES HALF OF ALBUM

Tuesday, July 6, 2010: Los Angeles, CA:

Houston rapper, Paul Wall, is all set to drop his 4th major label album, Heart of a Champion, on July 13th through SwishaHouse/Asylum Records, which he will celebrate in his native city, after which he leaves for the Middle East on his 4th USO tour. Paul will be travelling to undisclosed countries, performing for our troops from August 2nd through August 9th. Previous tours with the USO have taken “The People’s Champ” to places like Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. Paul will be joined on the tour with DJ E-Man of L.A.’s Power 106 station and that station’s morning show host, Big Boy.

Almost half of the tracks featured on Heart of a Champion are produced by Paul’s long-time friend and Expensive Taste band-mate, Travis Barker. The album will also feature several songs from Expensive Taste, the group which includes Skinhead Rob (Transplants) in addition to Paul and Travis.

Houston-based production duo, Beanz N Kornbread, are credited with the majority of the tracks not produced by Travis, including lead single I’m on Patron, a lyrical documentary of a feeling that most of us have experienced – and greatly regretted the next day – that of simply having too much fun of the liquid variety. I’m On Patron is the perfect accompaniment to that ‘blame it on the alcohol’ kind of night and sure to be a party staple.

Feature duties for Heart of a Champion include a diverse list of cast members including Jim Jones, Yelawolf and Raekwon but do not ignore Paul’s Houston roots; Bun B, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Devin the Dude and Lil’ Keke each get their turn at the mic. Another Houston feature is Johnny Dang aka TV Johnny with whom Paul Wall shares a grills and jewelry business which caters to A-list celebrities and average Joes alike. In fact, the two are doing so well that they opened a second store, in the Galleria, right next door to Neiman Marcus.

Always an advocate for the Texas music scene, Paul Wall was recently tapped as President of the Recording Academy’s Texas Chapter. In this role, he hopes to educate and enlist the help of Texas musicians from every genre, to ensure that the state is well represented in the Grammy’s voting body. The natural politician in Paul Wall makes him the perfect candidate for this role. He embodies his moniker, “The Peoples Champ.”
With two #1 album debuts, a Platinum plaque and a Grammy nomination under his belt, not to mention having some of the hottest celebs in the nation rocking his signature diamond-encrusted grills at one point or another, Paul Wall is the embodiment of the Hip Hop success story. His journey began humbly enough as a promoter for hometown indie label, SwishaHouse, and culminated with him being largely instrumental in the growth of the Houston rap movement and its rise into the national arena.
There have been a total of 7 albums since then and the journey continues with no sign of slowing down. 10 years in and Paul Wall remains in the game and in the hearts of the people. Without question, he truly has ‘The Heart of a Champion.’

Houston, Texas rapper Paul Wall Listening Party July 9th!

BK_pimpc_02_full_imageIt’s been over two and a half years since the death of the late rapper, but new music from Chad “Pimp C” Butler will soon be available to his fans.

With UGK partner & rhyme Bun B’s Trill O.G. slated for an August 3rd release date, it’s only right for the Pimp’s album to follow soon after. Preliminary artwork for The Naked Soul of Sweet James Jones leaked online over a year ago, leaving people to speculate and anticipate the album’s release. Now the speculation is over as the album is currently set for release on September 21, 2010. The record will be Pimp C’s third and probably final solo release under famed Southern label Rap-A-Lot Records, which will be distributed through their new venture with Fontana/Universal Records.

While this may be a posthumous album from Pimp C, longtime friend and UGK partner Bun B assured their many supporters that the album will be of quality.

‘We had enough vocals [for the album], but it wasn’t just about taking whatever vocals I had available, ‘ Bun B said in an interview with XXL Magazine last year. ‘It was about constructing songs. It wasn’t about just throwing all the Pimp C I had out there. I had to really try to make an album.’

Noah Jones “They Label Me A Monster” Mixtape!

Posted by lunatic On June - 15 - 2010

NoahFront
All year long, Noah Jones has been doing guest features, shooting videos at different venues and building relationships. It’s been quite the 2010 after 2009 saw Noah release his debut “The Incinerator” album that featured Crooked I, Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock, Glasses Malone, Knoc-turn’al and more. We didn’t forget about the eager fans who wanted something new  in 2010 though. They Label Me A Monster shows a sharpened lyrical Noah from some of his best verses as well as collaborations that didn’t see their way on any project. You have Knoc-turn’al, Charlie Clips, Rain, X.O of Black Wall Street, Brainstorm (Dyme Def) and more. The project also includes freestyles over some of the hottest industry beats from Drake, Lil Wayne, Big Boi of OutKast, T.I. and many more to rock with on this insane project!
