Everyone is buzzing about the new R&B sensation Dallas Blocker, whose single “Rock Ya Body” has earned a #75 Billboard spot, and is being heard by over two million weekly with radioplay in all major Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, and Oklahoma markets. I talked with the budding artist for a deeper look into his sound and to talk about his upcoming projects.

Mikey: Congratulations on your success with the hit single. Did you know this would be the single to blow up?

Dallas Blocker: Absolutely not. I had no idea! It was one of those things you do and just see what happens. The song was actually done a year ago and some major execs believed it was a hit, they just found me to pull it off, and it worked out!

Mikey: How do you feel about the thoughts that R&B is a less popular, more obsolete genre in comparison to hip-hop? Do you find it harder to get past the blues barrier?

Dallas Blocker: I don’t think it’s too different on a marketing or promotional scale. I think it’s a bunch of bs that its harder to break an R&B record. Good music is just that, and good music will always sell. I think it’s more of a challenge because even though rap has to always be real, R&B still has to be a dream, a fantasy, a mystery almost.

Mikey: Who are some R&B artists in the game right now who are keeping the soulful genre alive?

Dallas Blocker: Right now? I’m a fan of Trey Songz because he can do his own thing in R&B. He’s talented and makes music the way he wants, with his own style.

Mikey: Ok you said that was right now. So…all time favorites?!

Dallas Blocker: My favorites are all 90’s artists: H- Town, R-Kelly and Babyface are both great songwriters, Silk with the album with Meeting In My Bedroom, Tonight.

Mikey: So you’ve worked with countless artists, Rick Ross, J-Dawg, Slim Thug. What have these experiences done for you?

Dallas Blocker: They’ve given me a great stage to showcase my talent, even on a hip-hop track. It helps the groundwork of my foundation and lets people know I’ve worked with all these great and credible artists. I didn’t come out of nowhere, I been doin my thing.

Mikey: You’ll be shooting your first video soon! What can the fans expect from you on screen?

Dallas Blocker: I’m excited about it! We’re gonna shoot the video in LA during the BET Awards, and it’ll be my first time attending the Awards, so the video shoot is my celebration. I wont give too much away, but the video will definitely be true to the people who love and support the hit. It’ll be nice, we’re doin it big and not just regionally. But I’m keeping it real, and we gon’ have a good time.

Mikey: I’m sure your fans are looking forward to that. And what are you working on right now, the album?

Dallas Blocker: Yes, I’m working on my album, with TF Records and Blockerboy Music, Beanz & Kornrbead. I’ve been getting some major looks, so I’m making sure this is going to be an album full of good music.

Mikey: Something interesting, you of course have loads of female fans, but you surprisingly have a large male fan base as well that supports your music!

Dallas Blocker: Guys need to be able to relate R&B, straight from a dudes perspective. Like I have this song called “Bottom Line” that says I may lie, cheat, smoke, drink, but the bottom line is that I love you. And some women don’t be tryin to hear that but some women know it’s real! That’s how it is. And I mean, of course women will relate to R&B. Love, sex, emotion, relationships, women can relate to that. Male fans help solidify an artist, they keep us cool. When the dudes start sayin, “Oh I don’t fuck wit ______”, then that’s when you start to become last week’s news.
