Interview and musical details after the jump.
HoustonHipHop.Net: You moved to Texas after graduating high school. What lead you to that decision?
Wes Coas: Moving to Texas was really about education and not the music. I’ve always been progressive and I felt stagnant in California so I had to make a move and the opportunity to increase my knowledge came [in Houston] and I took it.
HoustonHipHop.Net: Did you experience a culture shock when leaving California for Texas?
Wes Coas: It wasn’t really a culture shock because I’m use to moving really fast and people tend to have a misconception of the south being slow and that’s not true. The south is very precise and exact. I was doing a million different things so I didn’t feel anything but noticing that my grind was working really well [out here].
HoustonHipHop.Net: What was the biggest difference between Compton and Houston?
Wes Coas: Gangs, women and weather.
HoustonHipHop.Net: Did moving to Houston fuel your career? How did you use it as motivation?
Wes Coas: To be honest, Houston is the home of independent music in my opinion. A blueprint has been laid [here from all the independent rappers moving tens and thousands of units on their own] and you just have to study it. So like I said, I had no intention of doing music when I moved here. In California, we don’t have a concept of the independent hustle [in the music industry] – everyone is validated by the [record] deal. It motivated me to take the time and examine indie music and [how it] moves. Once I understood that, it made things a lot easier.
HoustonHipHop.Net: What was the level of competition like artistic wise when you moved to Houston?
Wes Coas: Houston artists are very diverse and equally talented in their various genres. Being from the West Coast, I don’t know if I really have any competition because here in Houston, I’m my own genre. If anything, I compete with the preconceived views of the West Coast and it’s been like that from day one.
HoustonHipHop.Net: After moving to Houston, you released your debut album “Manifest Destiny.” How have you grown as an artist since then?
Wes Coas: Here is the interesting thing – As an artist, I’ve grown to pay attention to the audience. “Manifest Destiny” is my Reasonable Doubt. My albums get better, but my essence is in that album. So when it’s all said and done, you will see that there is more to the story if you read the whole book.
HoustonHipHop.Net: How did the situation with Houston based Management Company Flycat Music Group come along?
Wes Coas: I’ve known {CEO of Flycat Music Group] Maro for years as an artist and he started booking shows. He always looked out for me to perform so we attempted to kind of link up but the other guy had his own thoughts, so it was him and I. He kinda knew my mindset and he decided to step back and do more business related things and I wanted to do more music related ventures. The reversal kind of worked out and so here we are. www.imaflycat.com (shameless plug)
HoustonHipHop.Net: Why should fans check out your new “Great Western Form” project?
Wes Coas: Beats by 7th Letter, good lyrics, and if you miss real West Coast music, then this is the dopest album from the West since “Chronic 2001.” That alone is worth the listen. It’s 60 minutes of pure heat!
HoustonHipHop.Net: What’s the biggest misconception regarding artists who reside in Houston?
Wes Coas: People underestimate the artists from Houston and the South in general. Its more than Delta’s and Rims just like the West Coast is more than dickies and Dayton’s.
